Stress is seemingly constant in today’s world. Some are calling it the Health Epidemic of the 21st Century. Look around. Everyone seems to be stressed these days. People report stress from their jobs, relationships, finances, health, family, traffic, a long supermarket line (seriously). There’s a constant feeling of rushing, but never catching up.
The result? Burnout. Anxiety. Fatigue. Sleeplessness. Irritability. Depression. The list goes on…
Many of us feel that stress simply doesn’t let up and that we have no control over it. We call this chronic stress, and it has shown to be damaging for the brain and body. An estimated 75-90% of doctor’s visits are for stress-related issues, and chronic stress is a factor linked to the six leading causes of death.
So what does this mean for us? The people living in this society. The people dealing with the reality of stress. The people trying our best to get by in a world of constant demands and pressure.
How do we slow down in a fast-paced world? How do we stay healthy and well? How do we stay calm and centered?

Part 1: Mindfulness
In recent years, science has caught up to the benefits of mindfulness and meditation, solidifying it as a part of mainstream culture and an answer to the stress of modern life.
Some of the benefits of Mindfulness include:

- Decreased depression
- Decreased burn-out
- Increased willpower and decision-making ability
- Emotional regulation
- Increased attention, focus, and concentration
- Lowered blood pressure

Due to these findings, this ancient practice has been introduced to many different areas of society. Mindfulness is now in many schools, hospitals, and corporations. We now have meditation apps and gadgets. Mindfulness-based techniques are even used by Navy SEALS to reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and alter brain activity.
Despite these advancements, mindfulness remains unfamiliar and inaccessible to many people. Even those who are knowledgeable about meditation often struggle to apply to to everyday life. For many, those apps go unused. That meditation “habit” only lasts a day or two. We get swept up in our day-to-day lives and forget to prioritize inner peace.
